This is the 1985 comedy with Val Kilmer. The name of the character who would enter and exit the closet was Lazlo Hollyfield, portrayed by Jon Gries.
Lazlo had been the student prodigy like Gabe and Chris, but burned out under the pressure. He had his secret lair in the dorm where he was working the sweepstakes scam to win all the prizes he drives away with at the end.
